Instagram shows when a post was shared using relative timestamps such as “1h”, “2d” or “1w”. It does not display the exact publication time in its standard interface.

For journalists, researchers, social media managers and anyone needing to verify when something was posted, this can be a problem. Relative timestamps change as time passes and do not allow for precise comparisons between posts.

To address this, I built a free Chrome extension (using AI) that reveals the exact date and time (down to the second) for Instagram posts, reels, comments and direct messages.

The Exact Time Viewer for Instagram Chrome extension displays the precise timestamp for Instagram content directly alongside Instagram’s existing time labels.

Instagram only shows relative timestamps that change over time, making it difficult for users to determine the precise publication time of content. This extension reveals the exact datetime embedded in Instagram's metadata.

The extension injects a content script into Instagram pages. It uses a MutationObserver to watch for time elements with datetime attributes, extracts the ISO timestamp from the element's metadata, formats it according to user-configurable settings (timezone, clock format, seconds), and displays it inline or as a tooltip next to Instagram's existing relative time label. Settings are stored locally via chrome.storage.sync.

The extension only runs on Instagram pages and cannot be tested for actual runtime behavior (e.g., whether it correctly parses Instagram's DOM).

Instagram's own login requirement is not analyzed as part of the extension's requirements since the extension does not manage authentication.
