Weblin has been around since 2007, and I remember having joined almost immediately. The original team/company sold its operation and core functionality to Lupus Labs, which not only got it going again, but it even added extra functionality (and more is coming soon!). One nice surprise was the ability to bring your avatar from Ready Player Me and turn it into a Weblin avatar — a good idea, for those who love some consistency across the many virtual worlds out there. Another bonus is that your old Backpack items are still there, stored who knows where (or how) — I lost nothing! It's clear and obvious that, departing from the previous group, the new administration wants to engage Weblin users into cryptoassets, and that's how they will make their profit (or so they hope). Still, they're not the kind of *pushing* you into using what you don't wish to. I would have given five stars if the current iteration (as of 2024) of the registration/avatar creation website was slightly less confusing to navigate. To be honest, the actual Weblin interface to one's avatar hasn't changed at all, and is familiar as it ever was. It's just that the "total privacy" features are sometimes a bit confusing to understand: there is no "login to Weblin" option. You can essentially name your Weblin avatar anything. And you either keep your 2007 avatar around, or you create a brand new one (or several!) from Ready Player Me, with whatever account you have *there*. The two are completely separate — to the point that neither Ready Player Me, nor Weblin, store any actual data about your Weblin avatar. That, in turn, means that you need to generate the animations for your Weblin avatar every time you register in a new browser (I still haven't tested what happens between versions). Where exactly Weblin "knows" who you are — to assign the Backpack to your avatar, for instance — is a big mystery to me, but it sort of works quite well across browsers and computers. Alas, once you overcome these setup procedures, using Weblin in 2024 is as easy as it was in 2007, with pretty much the same functionality (and emites/animations!) as before. You just keep the extension on your browser turned on, abd "everything happens". Give it a bit more polishing on the supporting website (the other day, I was looking into the developer documentation; today, I forgot where it was, and now have to search around to figure out where they have hidden it...), and you'll get the 5 stars from me. As it stands, the extension itself is worth those 5 stars.
