xTab is a Chrome extension that lets you limit the maximum number of tabs that can be open at one time.
You can set the tab limit to any number and choose what tab should be removed when you hit that limit:
- Least recently used (default)
- Least accessed
- Oldest
You can alternatively block new tabs from opening completely once the limit has been reached.

Awesome! This one add-on has increased my productivity and focus more than anything else. Earlier, I used to open browser for one thing and all of sudden after 20-30 minutes later, I would find myself reading something else entirely. Something that would be vaguely related to what I had opened my browser for in the first place. And I would have at least a dozen tabs open unable to focus on anything. But now with this extension, I have limited the number of tabs to 7 which forces me to focus and finish the task/reading on hand first. Thank you developer.
can stop you from opening too many tabs. can be configured to prevent new tabs from opening instead of just destroying an old one.

after the update 0.2.1 , the program does not work properly. After the first block, it loses its functionality
STUPID extension... stupid cruel way to destroy my existing tabs. This extension must limit my ability to open new tabs over the limit, but NOT destroy my already opened tabs without even asking. This is as stupid as it can get.
Installs malware that changes your homepage among other things
It automatically closes your tab, you don't even know which one was closed! It doesn't warn you. I want something that tells me how many tabs I have and limits opening new ones.
Should also give option to not allow to open new tab once at max amount because some people might have ALL important tabs. Do this and I will give the extension 6 stars!
Nice extension. I have some recommendations though: 1) Maximum locked tabs option (see:2) 2) "Lock this tab" option for individual tabs, so they won't be vanished.
