View and edit Microsoft Office files (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) directly in Chrome using Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides as the rendering and editing engine
Allows users to open and work with Microsoft Office documents without having Microsoft Office installed on their computer, using Google's free web-based editors instead
User opens an Office file (by clicking, dragging into Chrome, or via Gmail/Drive). The extension intercepts the file via MIME handler registration, opens it in a tab using its built-in QOWT (Quickoffice Web Toolkit) rendering engine, and presents a basic editor. User can view/edit the file, then save back to Office format or convert to Google Docs/Sheets/Slides format (requires Google Account sign-in for conversion and Drive features).

- Chrome users who need to view or edit Microsoft Office files without owning Microsoft Office / Users of Google Docs/Sheets/Slides who receive Office format files / Chrome OS users (extension pre-installed)
- The extension's core JS files (mainApp.js, mainQOWT.js) are heavily minified, making deep code flow analysis difficult
- Cannot fully verify whether basic view-only mode works without login from source alone - the sign-in messages are for conversion/copy actions specifically
- Google Workspace (formerly G Suite) may have additional paid tiers but those are external to the extension itself
No evidence of paid features, subscriptions, payment processing, or upgrade prompts in the extension source. The 'promo' dialogs are for Office Compatibility Mode conversion to Google Docs format (a free feature), not payment-related. No terms like premium, subscription, payment, purchase, billing, or upgrade were found. The keyword matches for 'pro' and 'stripe' are false positives from words like 'process', 'promo' (feature promotion), 'predefined process', and 'diagonal_stripe' (a UI pattern).

- The extension requires a Google Account to perform core workflow actions such as converting Office files to Google Docs/Sheets/Slides format and saving copies to Google Drive. Multiple locale strings confirm this: 'You need to sign in to your Google Account in order to convert this file' and 'You need to sign in to your Google Account in order to make a copy.' The extension uses the 'identity' and 'identity.email' permissions for Google authentication. However, basic viewing of locally-opened Office files may work without login.
Does not work at all on new macbooks with m-chips. Used to be amazing, but has dramatically decreased the usefulness of having a google business account.
Not work on M2 mac
I worked fine on windows, but it doesn't work on mac m1 at all
Doesn't work on any mac made in the last 2 years lol
What a wonderful extension. Got my new Macbook Pro 2022 model and I can't work on any .docx file stored in Google Drive using Google Docs because the extension pops up, doesn't load anything and I can't disable the extension, Chrome forces me to use it. Funny enough, if I go to Safari and open the same .docx file from Google Drive, the regular Google Docs editor opens it and I can work on it immediately. Interesting how Google is shooting in its own feet: Google Chrome is pushing me away from using Google Chrome and use Safari instead because of forcing me to use an Google extension that's not strictly needed since Google Docs opens the files already in any browser without the extension!!!!
dependent on this
100% recomendado.
Useless
was brilliant but now no longer works on new macs.
