Get full text of scholarly articles as you browse. When you view a research article, Unpaywall automatically looks for a copy in our index of 20 million free, legal fulltext PDFs. If we find one, click the green tab to read the article.

Unpaywall points you to legal, author-posted manuscripts that are hosted on university and government web servers. We are pointing to versions that have been posted with the full and explicit authorization of the publishers themselves.

These free, author-posted manuscripts are often called "Green Open Access" and are a longstanding and completely legal part of the scholarly communications ecosystem. The majority of scholarly journals permit authors to "self-archive" their papers on university and government web servers. It's these legally self-archived papers that Unpaywall helps users find. Any papers posted outside of publisher permissions are NOT included in our index.

Researchers and students hit paywalls when trying to read scholarly articles. Unpaywall bypasses paywalls by pointing users to legal, author-posted manuscripts hosted on university and government servers (Green Open Access) or other freely available versions.

1) User browses any scholarly article page. 2) Content script (unpaywall.js) extracts the DOI from meta tags/data attributes/publisher-specific HTML. 3) Extension searches two sources in parallel: local PDF links on the page and the oaDOI API. 4) If a free legal version is found, a colored tab appears on the right edge of the page. 5) User clicks the tab to open the free full-text PDF. If no free version is found, a grey locked icon is shown.

Source code is fully available and analyzed. All key files (background.js, unpaywall.js, options.js, popup.js, inside-frame.js) were read in full. The oaDOI API response format and unpaywall.org welcome/logging behavior could not be verified server-side, but client-side code shows no auth or payment logic.

The extension is entirely free with no payment infrastructure. No Stripe/payment platform references, no premium/upgrade UI, no subscription or billing logic. All 'paywall' keyword hits refer to the product name 'Unpaywall', not paid features. 'Pro' hits are false positives from jQuery code. 'License' hits are from Font Awesome and jQuery library licenses. The oaDOI API is used freely with no API key gating.

登录理由: The extension operates entirely without user authentication. It runs automatically as a content script on all URLs, extracts DOI from page meta tags and attributes, then queries the public oaDOI API with a hardcoded email parameter ([email protected]) — not user credentials. Settings are stored locally in chrome.storage (only 'OA Nerd Mode' toggle). No login UI, no auth flows, no user accounts anywhere in the codebase.
