Use keyboard shortcut on Windows ctrl+shift+x or on MacOS cmd+shift+x (think about x as the close button you can use on any website).
Once you get used to the keyboard shortcut, you'll be using it all the time and gonna love it ! ; )
Important features:
* It works on any website. It doesn't rely on a static list of rules, as some other extensions.
* It doesn't require any permissions.

I just read about it on TNW, and thought "wow, great but is that technically possible?" I installed it and tested some sites. As I expected, it did not work well. It did hide some overlay, but not all of them on every site. Also, it hide some contents that were not overlay. I expected this because there is no standard form of overlay and different programmers have used different implementation. Anyways, there should be an indication how many overlays are on the current page. It shows no indication and clicking the hide overlay button shows a pop up "There is no overlay...". I truly hate pressing pop ups, unless it is absolutely necessary. It should show that message in a toast (auto-disappearing message) instead.
