Chrome doesn't allow you to configure a new tab URL.
It always opens its New Tab Page with a search bar and some browsing history.
With this extension, you can use the options page to store a link to a page or even a path to a local file that will be loaded when a new tab is created.
It is very lightweight and easy to use!
For people who prefer dark mode, try enabling the following Chrome builtin flag:
chrome://flags/#enable-force-dark

Thanks! Your extension helped me to keep the aestetics of new tab. Search engine, that I use, don't show background image from Chrome's theme. So, I set chrome://new-tab-page as url, and now I have beautiful new tab and can search from omnibox (text cursor is there).

how do I fix error ERR_FILE_NOT_FOUND
It's a great functional extension. However, the extension's options page (for me) macOS Ventura, Chrome (obvi) is a bunch of gobbledygook. It's rows and rows of boxed question marks. I followed a little tutorial, so I was able to past the desired URL in the right place, and voila—but it's weird. 🙏
Love it, but as a suggestion please provide an option to keep the page loaded somehow. It's not the end of the world but when I access a new tab the background image on the page I want to use always has to load and it takes a little while as it's applied by Javascript.
i wanted a blank black page for new tabs and this does it. 100% satisfied.

Die Beschreibungen könnten bei Chrome Erweiterungen wirklich etwas besser sein. Aber es tut was es soll und funktioniert einwandfrei. Dicker Daumen hoch! Unverständlich warum sowas nicht standardmäßig in Chrome verfügbar ist.

Great extension, with 1 caveat!: The styling of the new tab screen has a bright white background which is rather jarring (as mentioned above) when dark mode is enabled. I think the simplest fix would be changing the default background color of the extension to be black/grey/a darker color. Otherwise this extension is lightweight and very elegant! Thanks so much
