Converts an image to PNG before showing the Save As dialog.

WebP is a new image format developed by Google. These images are small, but their format is not widely recognized yet. By converting the image to PNG, you will be able to use it in image editing programs, and/or upload it to online image hosting sites such as imgur.

The extension has a low footprint: It does not use any memory or CPU unless you use it by clicking on the context menu option.

Original release date: 3 Augustus 2013.

Update (4 January 2014): If you use Chrome 30 or lower, then you cannot save the image from some web sites (such as the Chrome Web Store). Update to Chrome 31 for an optimal user experience.

Notice (30 June 2014): Chrome 35 on KDE (Linux) has a bug that causes Chrome to crash whenever the Save As dialog is opened by an extension. Downgrade to Chrome 34 or upgrade to Chrome 36 to solve the problem.

It would be better if the image is not renamed and saved to the folder previously used for saving

It's useful, but there's no way to choose a default folder for downloading. You'd think that this would be no problem, because windows remembers the last folder you saved a file to and defaults to that folder. Not so here. No matter what I do, it defaults to the same folder every time, and that folder isn't the one I want for this.

This is a life saver for me as I am trying to inventory about 200 plus sets of craft stamps. I had to go in and screenshot and then edit the screen shot instead of just saving as a png. Thanks for developing this to make my inventory progress so much easier. I really appreciate it!

Useful for anyone who got annoyed about having the images saved as WEBP file instead. Also the extension sucks! Since it gives me an error on Planet Minecraft for no reason! I'm using a different one!

I've never written a review for a chrome extension before, but felt compelled to say that this one (Save as PNG) works awesome every time for me and I love it! Thanks to the developer! Webp's be GONE!

it stopped working for 48 h now update: No, this was not a false positive. Chrome correctly detected and disabled the "Save Image as Type" extension because it contained real malicious code. The extension (which had over 1 million users) was hijacked by its new owner around mid-to-late November 2025, and malicious updates were pushed starting then. Google only took action in March 2026 (removing it from the Chrome Web Store and auto-disabling it for everyone), even though Microsoft had already flagged and removed the Edge version earlier in February 2025. ### What the malware actually did Detailed code analysis (by reversing the extension files and checking Chrome's on-disk storage) shows the malicious payload was in inject.js (a content script that ran on every page). It did not steal personal data, passwords, cookies, or exfiltrate anything to external servers. Instead, it was designed purely for affiliate commission theft (a form of ad revenue hijacking): - After you used the extension a certain number of times (it had gating checks like “at least 10 images saved” to avoid detection during audits), it would silently contact a command-and-control server. - It then loaded hidden full-screen iframes (removed after ~8.5 seconds) pointing to affiliate redirect URLs from a service called karmanow (part of a larger network run by Karma Shopping Ltd.). - This affected 578+ shopping sites (Amazon, Best Buy, Adidas, Shein, etc.). The iframes “stuffed” affiliate tracking cookies so that any future purchases you made would route commissions to the attacker instead of the original affiliate links. In short: it scraped revenue from your potential shopping activity without you noticing. No data collection beyond compiling a list of URLs for this purpose, and nothing was sent out from your browser in a way that compromised your personal info. ### Risks and what you should do - Low personal risk: Your passwords, browsing history, or sensitive data were not at risk. The malware was financial fraud against merchants/affiliates, not traditional spyware. - Chrome has already disabled it and removed it from the Web Store, so it can no longer run. - Recommended steps: 1. Confirm it’s gone (go to chrome://extensions/ — it should be disabled or missing). 2. If you want to be extra thorough, clear cookies/site data for shopping sites you frequent (or just run localStorage.removeItem("ldcsv") and localStorage.removeItem("siatlrx") in the DevTools console on affected pages — harmless traces left behind). 3. No need for a full antivirus scan unless you’re paranoid, but it doesn’t hurt. Google has not issued an official public statement beyond the automatic malware warning, which is why the Chrome Community thread (the exact one you posted) has no direct reply from the team yet. But independent researchers and multiple tech outlets have confirmed the same details through code disassembly. ### Bottom line This was a real threat (affiliate hijacking), but a relatively mild one compared to data-stealing malware. You’re safe now that Chrome has forced the disable. For alternatives to convert WebP images on right-click, look for well-reviewed open-source options on the Chrome Web Store (e.g., “Save Image As JPG, PNG, WebP” or similar lightweight ones) — just check recent reviews and avoid anything with sudden ownership changes. If you had the extension installed for a long time, you didn’t lose any money yourself — the attackers just pocketed commissions that would have gone elsewhere.

Used to be perfect, but it's abruptly stopped working and just displays an "Invalid filename" error when I try to use it. Pity
