This extension allows using the back key to go back to where you came from if it would normally have no pages to go back to.
To try it, open a new tab from a link, and then press the backspace key (note: this will not work within the web store; and if a form field is selected you need to tab out of it. It also obviously cannot work when Adobe Flash (or another plugin) is focused, as this captures key presses).
-- Tip: if you use a keyboard key or mouse button that does not appear to work in Last Tab Back, you can set up a custom key in the options page. Click on the box and try your key. If this still doesn't work, you might be able to set up a custom key in the keyboard or mouse software (possibly only for Chrome) and then try setting the custom key again in the options page. --
Pressing backspace / a custom key / clicking the LastTabBack button will go back as usual, until there are no such pages. Then it will close the tab and go back to the tab that opened this one.
This allows you to open new tabs and then go back where you came from without having to remember whether it was a new tab or a normal click to navigate - pressing backspace will take you back to the results either way.
You can also press Ctrl+Backspace to just go back to the tab that opened this one without closing the current tab, if you wish to leave this page to view later.

Does what it is supposed to do -- give you a special back button. Unfortunately, the docs say there is no way to replace the standard back button, so it's of limited value. I guess I am mourning the loss of "back to close" Firefox extension.

Sometimes when I hit Alt-LeftArrow to go back it will close the tab even when there are still previous pages to go back to

it s a shame even if i set a shortcut inside ext i have to show icons in toolbar for the extension to work wasting space!!!
Thank You! This functionality is what kept me using Firefox over Chromium. I'm so used to navigate back by using the Backspace key, including seamless closing and going back to previous tab. In Firefox I have Back is Close add on, and rely on it all the time. I searched for something similar on Chrome a few times. Finally today I found your extension. You should consider adding 'Back is Close' tag to your entry in the web store so that people like me can find this wonderful add on easier.
If only it would work. Just works like 10% of the time. I just want it to close any tab you are on, if there is no more history for this tab. Update: seems not to work with my mouse back button. Only keyboard
Works as advertised (almost). Nice to be able to do in Windows what I do in Android all the time - close the newly opened tab and go back to the tab I came from. But to get it working with my MS mouse I had to set the left side button from the default Back to Keystroke>Alt-left arrow. Not sure I can tolerate the havoc that may cause in other programs like games. However, when doing this I discovered the right side button is Close by default, which pretty much does the same as this extension. -2 stars since it doesn't actually use the system 'Back' but rather forced me to reassign my mouse button.
Wonderful extension for Chrome! I was so desperate for a clone of Firefox's BackToClose that I almost wrote one myself. There is a conflict with the Crossfire extension which allows one to navigate links via the arrow keys. The back key won't close when Crossfire is active.
