Try h264ify if YouTube videos stutter, take up too much CPU, eat battery life, or make your laptop hot.

By default, YouTube streams VP8/VP9 encoded video. However, this can cause problems with less powerful machines because VP8/VP9 is not typically hardware accelerated.

In contrast, H.264 is commonly hardware accelerated by GPUs, which usually means smoother video playback and reduced CPU usage. h264ify makes YouTube stream H.264 videos instead of VP8/VP9 videos.

Note: 4K and 1440p videos will not be available because YouTube no longer encodes those videos in H.264

1080p30 fullscreened on a 4k monitor went from using approximately 60% CPU to about 5%. GPU decoding went from 0% to 7%. I'm running it on an AMD Phenom 1090t and Nvidia GTX 1050ti. Regardless of your hardware not using this extension means more heat, less battery life, worse multitasking... that is unless your GPU is incapable of hardware decoding... but then you might be using XP era hardware so you might be willing to accept to lower the resolution of youtube videos to 720p or 480p and call it a day.

It does what it says perfectly But, First things first: DO NOT USE THIS EXTENSION IF YOU -> Have a powerful system with a gpu capable of decoding VP8/VP9. If then, there's no point of using this extension. It's for old systems which do not support hardware decode of VP8/VP9/AV1 -> Watch videos at 1440/4k: It limits the video to 1080p because youtube supports H264 upto a maximum of 1080p only. -> If your system supports VP8/VP9 decode but not AV1. Use "Not yet, AV1" Extension which is based on this extension to block av1 only and not vp8/9. USE IT IF: -> Your GPU doesn't support VP8/9 decoding -> If you have a extremely slow CPU and it heats up pretty badly while watching youtube.

Постоянно тормозил ютуб на 720p 50 fps с упором в ЦП. При этом с каждым кадром заикался звук. Core2Duo E4700 2,6 ГГц*2 ЦП Видео: NVIDIA GeForce GT 520 Стало 1080 60 fps тянуть ЦП ~20-90%. В свернутом окне 15-20 Заикания исчезли! Появились торможения при развертывании окна, и перемотке. Ато 60 FPS в Тех же Неновостях Зачем МНе?) Не бокс же и не дота) Спасибо за это чудо!!! Еще бы настроек подогнали бы типа: размер кеша на видосы, сколько просчитывать кадров вперед, продгружать поток на перед... КУЛ! )

while this extension used to work great, if you bring up stats for nerds as of the last few months, youll notice its not streaming in 264 anymore, and hence have high processor usage. i'm not sure if this is only happening in brave, or in chrome as well.
