By default, YouTube streams VP8/VP9 encoded video. However, this can cause problems with less powerful machines because VP8/VP9 is not typically hardware accelerated.
In contrast, H.264 is commonly hardware accelerated by GPUs, which usually means smoother video playback and reduced CPU usage. h264ify makes YouTube stream H.264 videos instead of VP8/VP9 videos.
Note: 4K and 1440p videos will not be available because YouTube no longer encodes those videos in H.264

WARNING: It's injecting ADs in sites. I've seen weird torrent ads in a Sony Vaio site. After disabling h264ify, it disappeared. After enabling it again, it appear. It's a great extension but something happened there. BE AWARE OF IT!
Отлично, GTX 980 не умеет аппаратно VP9 на ютубе. i5-4690K слаб для 4K@60FPS видео, чтобы софтверно декодить его. На помощь пришел ваш плагин. Так как все видеокарты GeForce, начиная с 600-ой серии умеют аппаратно H.264, теперь нагрузку с CPU как рукой сняло и видео *.mp4 декодит аппаратно видеокарта и ошибки из логов браузера пропали. Спасибо за плагин :)

Very very useful. Intel GPUs can accelerate h264 since 2008 (GAM4500MHD). VP9 is fully accelerate in Kaby Lake since late 2016.

Such a savior for streaming on older hardware, and especially for anything HD.
I have a Surface Pro 3 that was having battery/processor usage problems streaming youtube videos. After doing a little research I came across this neat little plugin. I installed it in Chrome and saw the processor usage almost immediately drop from over 90% to under 30%. Soon after the heat and battery issues were no longer.
Limited to 1080 60 and doesn't appear to affect GPU utilisation at all, despite force-enabling hardware acceleration. Not much point for higher end machines. Does decrease CPU utilisation though.
Not just for underpowered machines! It extends my battery life significantly when watching HD/4K Youtube videos because the H.264 codec is hardware accelerated. I can't believe Youtube is configured to use VP9 codec by default so nobody except those with Kaby Lake processors get hardware accelerated decoding.
