- Target users
- DeFi users and crypto traders / NFT collectors and traders / Web3 application users / Solana ecosystem participants / Multi-chain crypto users
- Source code is heavily minified/bundled making deep feature analysis challenging
- Transaction fee percentages are dynamic and not hardcoded in source — actual fee rates cannot be confirmed from code alone
- The extension has 376 files with large chunks; some edge-case features may not have been fully inspected
MonetizationNo paid features detected
The extension is free to install and use with no subscription tiers, premium plans, or feature gating. Phantom earns revenue through transaction-based fees (swap fees with a percentage, gasless 'premium transaction fees', staking fees, and fiat on-ramp fees via Stripe/Bridge). These are standard DeFi wallet fee models applied to transactions, not paid feature tiers. The 'upgrade' keyword hits were in generic code context (error handling, protocol grammars), not payment UI. The 'purchase' hits refer to buying crypto with fiat currency via third-party providers, not purchasing a subscription. The 'premium' hits refer to 'premium transaction fee' for gasless swaps — a transaction fee, not a subscription. No Stripe subscription integration, no billing/plan APIs, no upgrade prompts were found in the source code.

- Reason
- Phantom is a self-custodial crypto wallet. Users create/import wallets using seed phrases (recovery phrases) and set a local password to lock the wallet — no email, phone, or service account is required. The store description explicitly states 'Private by design. No name, email, or phone number required.' The 'login' keyword hits in source code refer to blockchain authentication protocols (zkLogin for Sui, Sign-In with Ethereum EIP-4361, Sign-In with Solana) used for dApp connection, not user account login. No service-side authentication is needed for core wallet functionality.
The wallet has been stolen The secret words were not obtained by any person on planet Earth, only me, and the wallet was accessed and the currencies were stolen. What is the reason and what is the solution? Is this correct? Phantom wallet has never been hacked. The huge 8 mm hack that you are referring to is another wallet, and it was done by developers. The strange thing is that Phantom must disable this hacked add-on from the Chrome browser, but it seems that they are not professional.

WARNING!!! - Within hours after installation of this wallet I had a computer intrusion happen that led to the theft of other hot wallets in $73k in stablecoins + crypto assets stolen from my factory new Macbook Pro. I had not yet funded Phantom, but other wallets on my device were emptied and hacked. One suspected security flaw in the wallet that matches with the timeline of this hack was covered in the press. I reported to support right when hack happened, FBI/US SS who scanned my device, and asked Phantom team to compensate for the hack, but they claim it was not their fault and have ignored me since. If it's not Phantom's fault... why were the wallet engagement records their support team provided me adulterated and off? Why is this reviews page littered with more of the same experience? Why did another person I connected with the same month (Sept 2021) also face a computer intrusion hours after installing Phantom the same week as I did? I guess I need to have a Stanford compsci PhD + be a cybersec expert to not get everything I own hacked and stolen despite not being phished or inputting my seeds anywhere... and this is in fact a real, legitimate industry that markets products to the masses? This is the future of finance? I'm an immigrant, person of color, do not come from money at all, and soon to be in grad school and this inflicted in me SEVERE mental health issues, it got so bad I had to leave my crypto job due to triggers and existential concerns about the industry. Thankfully after medication and lots of therapy I am still here despite the dark time but still pretty unstable and affected from this. Funnily enough I had recommended Phantom as a wallet to hundreds of thousands of readers of ours at my work in financial publishing for a public company. Now I don't think that Phantom still has that same security flaw that I suspect caused my breach so likely fine now, but suffice to say I would in general recommend NOT to use this nor any web3 wallet until the industry improves UX + security massively. Horror stories are all over in every crypto community out there. Phantom alone aside, the tech has major problems for mass adoption in its current state. Imagine if the avg Joe with a 100 IQ used this - society could literally collapse. Yet crypto co's run superbowl ads, crypto marketers promote them everywhere, etc. If you have been a victim of a hack or computer intrusion that you believe was due to Phantom wallet security flaw - if in the US, write to your congressional reps, report to any and every regulator.
When I switch to localnet, it says "This feature is not supported when Solana Localnet is enabled". Why is that?
Couldn't make a transaction with Metamask, it forces me to use Phantom which I don't wanna use. F--k off.
cool
