Works as described
As other's have mentioned, it's currently broken due to a change in Chrome. Now it works to mute the site, rather than the tab. But worse, it can break your browser, which is why I'm posting this review - as a warning to others. While the extension's mute now works across a site, it is still separate from the built in "mute site" option, meaning you can't natively unmute a site muted with the extension. And since this setting is preserved, if you have muted any site and then remove or disable the extension, the site will stay muted. It would be easy for someone to disable the extension because of the issues, and later run into a muted site without connecting the dots on why it's muted. Additionally, it the control only works for the first tab opened for a site. Using it in any other tab will update the icon to say it's muted, but it will not actually mute. (Similarly, muting via the first tab won't update the extension icon in the other tabs.) If you close the first tab, the control switches to the next tab. But I found a situation where if I then mute this tab (the one newly in control), then use "reopen closed tab" to bring back the previous primary tab, and then attempt to unmute, it breaks all media playback. Videos can be scrubbed, but will not play. Edit: After disabling the extension, the native "mute site" feature will still not work for existing tabs. Closing the tab and opening it again seems to fix this.

great extension until chrome's latest update broke it :( welp
Great extension, I've used it for years, but recently discovered that chrome has a "Tab audio muting UI control" flag that you can click on the sound icon on the tab to mute/unmute only that tab. Since the extension hasn't been working well for a while, I'll stick with the native feature.
Semi-broke with Chrome's recent update. As stated by someone else, disabling Global media controls control Cast start/stop can semi-help, but it's unreliable. I noticed mostly when having a tab with audio going and opening a new audio tab, that tab will often not have audio at all even not muted, and sometimes it will have audio but the mute button still won't mute it. My workaround is to pause all other active audio tabs and reopen whatever tab was broken into a tab (and even still doesn't always do it). Extension's been great to me throughout the years, otherwise.
Very good extension, though mainly this is a reply to Demons Riot's post. There's a way to fix it. Go to chrome//flags and find "Global media controls control Cast start/stop" Disable that and it removes Chrome's new Media Control function that broke the extension in the update - muting individual tabs should now work as intended
