Once upon a time, Chrome had a feature hidden away in chrome://flags to allow users to mute individual tabs by clicking the speaker icon next to the tab's title. This was deemed "not good enough", as the Chrome developers wanted to remove the need for users to manually control tab audio, so it was removed in favour of the "Mute Site" feature.
Chrome can't yet automatically determine which tabs should be playing audio, so I made this extension to let the user make that decision. The button's in a different place due to Chrome API limitations, but apart from that, this extension should work exactly as the old "Mute Tab" feature did.

Just got this extension and seems like it will be great but for the fact that it won't mute any tabs for Google meets (which is why I want it in the first place). Anyone have any idea why that might be? Thanks!
A great extension. I've been using it ever since google removed the normal option to mute a tab. And in all honesty, I like it more. Having the mute button in a fixed position is great.
Thank you for this. The trade-off here is we'd have to add another icon to the toolbar to get mute tab functionality back, albeit only on active tab (have to switch to the tab to mute). It's just really bad Google removed this option, it's one feature I couldn't live without since I moved from Firefox and now I'm starting to think about going back. Firefox has tab muting with a single click working out of the box, no silly hidden flags. And the best of all is that we can remove the close button from all tabs so it doesn't interfere with the muting. Is it possible to remove the close button from all tabs in Chrome? Also, can you default to the light icon for incognito?
Best extension ever iam playing Generator Rex Evo Showdown its music is very bad its music making me very angry i open chrome web store and search for muter than i found Tab Muter i add this extension to my uc browser and i tap on the extension Mute tab that app is very good i give it 5 stars
It's really sad that Google removed this and that pkcastings on reddit said that it requires a bunch of code but then proceeded to say that Firefox and other browsers also contain that complex code. Excuses. btw it's a good idea to switch to Firefox or even MS Edge.
Some thoughts for possible future updates: 1.Custom-able keyboard shortcuts 2.Left Click options to mute all background tabs except current page 3.Blacklist for annoyingly noisy websites Cheers and thanks for the great work.
Lightweight and simple, perfect. Big middle finger towards chrome devs for removing the original feature.
Works perfectly
