📌 What is the Process Feedback extension?
The Process Feedback extension is for teachers and students. It pulls the edit history of a Google Docs document and turns that history into a writing process report.
In the process report, you can explore copy-paste events, the frequency and timing of breaks taken, typing fluency, time spent on each paragraph, time allocated to revision compared to initial drafting, and total typing time.

This has been invaluable for AP Research to help ensure the writing is their own.
I am really impressed with how powerful this tool is. As a high school English teacher, it is an invaluable asset for understanding students' thinking and writing processes, as well as giving them feedback. I appreciate it being a free tool as well. I have to buy all of my subscriptions and tools myself, so I feel so grateful that this one is free!
I love how this product allows me to see my students' writing process. It's easy to use and gives me a plethora of information.
I'm a technology coach for a unified school district and we are always looking for helpful tools for teachers and students, particularly that provide an extra layer of transparency. Given the state of our budget, free tools are essential. Process Feedback offers a rich tool at no cost. I've been happy to share this with many teachers, all of whom are thrilled with the ease of use and useful reports provided by this plugin.
It was a delight to discover this tool integrated into Google Docs. As an educator, I create documents for my students to work in, so I can see the version history. Process Feedback gives me even more information and access to the process of writing, which not only makes it possible to prevent and catch academic dishonesty, but also allows me to focus on the research and writing processes themselves rather than just the final product. Highly recommended.
As AI tools become more prevalent, in schools, being able to investigate the process work is more important than ever. This tool is essential. Keeping it free enables teachers to protect the integrity of their assessments. This tool that supports the learning-conversations I have with my students by providing evidence to back-up my observations. Slowly and carefully, I can encourage them to be accountable and give them an off-ramp when they are caught plagiarising.
So easy to use!
peak, please keep it free genuinely only expected to see the editing process, you can also see other stats like wpm and most used words. It also doesn't take long for a writing report to finish.
Work in a high school with IB program; helps with accountability and when suspecting AI, can show to students. I show them an example at the start of the year so students know what can be seen.
I teach composition at a community college. Flags (including false flags) for AI-generated text have made my job more difficult than it ought to be. The Process Feedback for Google Docs browser extension is not just a catch-the-cheating-student device. It also allows the writing teacher a quick, feasible way to see what the student writer is actually doing--not what they say or believe they are doing. I can have a conversation with the student about how they need to take more time and space to draft and revise. (News flash: most students turn in first drafts.) I am skeptical about most apps; it is rare that I feel compelled to write a review.
