This extension will make mailto: links open in a Gmail compose window. Nothing more, nothing less.
* Supports Google Apps accounts
* Works on javascript-inserted links
* Includes option of working on bcc: fields
It supports to, cc, subject, and body (and optionally bcc) fields, and is made to be compatible with RFC2368, the mailto: scheme standard.
It doesn't modify the mailto:address itself, so you can still see the link in the status bar when you hover over it, which allows you to easily read the target at a glance.

Worked after browser restart on Chrome
Update Oct 2020 - Works in my Google Chrome v85. (You have to restart browser after adding this extension.) You also may need to go into Windows default apps protocols and change your Mail to Chrome or a different browser I guess.

fantastic! I'm running Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, on an old Atom based Netbook with Chrome browser. Works perfect!
Doesn't work for my chrome 35 Mailto: links still open up my Thunderbird.

Works great! By default, the draft opens in a new tab; and upon sending the email, the tab closes automatically. Fast, nice and clean. Many thanks to the developer(s).
