High Contrast lets you browse the web with your choice of several high-contrast color filters designed to make it easier to read text.
When you install this extension, all pages are "inverted", so black becomes white and white becomes black. Press the "browser action" icon in the toolbar to toggle it on and off, or customize your settings on a per-site basis. Use a convenient keyboard shortcut to quickly change your settings while your browse.
Other extensions try to change the default colors, but this ends up breaking many popular websites. Only this extension applies filters to your page that invert almost everything - the only exception is photos, which are left alone.
Also note that the Chrome web store and other built-in pages like the New Tab page and Settings pages are unaffected - extensions like this one are not allowed to modify them, by design.

Switch to night mode and the display is much easier on your eyes!
A customisable colour filter applied to web pages to improve colour perception.
I get lighting induced migraines. This is life changing for me. I really like that there are 5 modes.
I liked the black background and the white texts and other links inverted, but I want the photos and other images to look normal, why do they need so much brightness? Is there any adjustment for that?
Good idea. On my system, the thing has the following bug: I invert one website to read it, then invert it back to normal, and after switching to other tabs that were open before, those are now inverted, so I have to disable High Contrast on every one of them individually. Makes me use High Contrast much less than I would otherwise. Happened on OS X both Lion and Mountain Lion.
The conversion is decent, however the performance of webpages (even simply scrolling) suffers SIGNIFICANTLY! Until this problem is resolved, I'm not sure how useful this will be.
useful, but also ruins the photos and other content embedded within the page. needs an update
It is useful, but slows everything down. Also, text is less readable, kind of blurry. I think I'll rather reduce my screen brightness.
I really love the method of inversion - whatever you're doing, the theming on the sites I've visited so far looks great and I would love to make this my night-time browsing default. HOWEVER the performance hit when using High Contrast mode is incredible. Nowhere is it worse than on gmail.
Very useful app. I like the suggestion about just inverting Luminance. One problem is that inverted colors are often hard to see when the contrast isn't high because it seems like the colors are inverted in post-gamma space. You should undo the gamma correction with something as simple as squaring values, then invert colors, then re-apply a gamma by taking the square root. You probably wouldn't have this problem by converting to Lab and just inverting L.
Ok this extension can be updated/improved ... But I say THANKS for that easy way to save me from headaches !! BIG THANKS !!
Inverting colors just makes many sites look weird. What the should do is just invert the brightness channel and keep the hues the same (e.g. remap to CIELAB, invert Luminance, remap back). Also, photo detection isn't working well on many sites. It doesn't quite invert it, but it sure mucks it up. The other thing that would be really nice is if it worked with Black Glass Enhanced (for making the black part of windows transparent in Windows 7).
