Go back with the backspace button! This extension re-enables the backspace key as a back navigation button -- except if you're writing text.
What's New in 3.0:
==================
* Updated to Manifest V3.
Before Chrome 52, the backspace key navigated back (if you weren't writing text). Many people lost their progress while working online by accidentally pressing backspace and leaving a page -- so we removed the feature from Chrome, and created this extension for those who prefer the old behavior.
This extension can't restore backspace on certain special pages, for example any of the "chrome://" pages such as Settings or Extensions.

This extension should not be needed! This should be an option within Chrome settings to enable or disable backspace. Google, please rethink this!!!
Not only does it sometimes have a delay in going back, it also kicks in when i have focus on a textbox inside a flash app.
No Shift + Backspace to go forward. Edit: Shift + Backspace implemented now.
Shift Backspace still not working. THIS IS A JOKE!! Going back to firefox!
Thanks for creating this remedy. I'm one of the people who wanted this left alone in the first place. 1. Please make this a browser setting, not an extension. My workplace doesn't allow me to install extensions, so I can't use this*, and now have different behaviours depending on whether I'm using Chrome on my work laptop or home laptop. That's bad UX. Application behaviours should be in settings. Additional functionality should be in extensions. *Yes, I know the registry hacks to enable extensions and have implemented them, so I'm lying. But what would a normal user do? 2. Please bring back SHIFT-BACKSPACE. Anyone who uses backspace to go back knows about the shortcut to go forward. Why create the extension to resolve a non-problem that should be a setting and only restore half the functionality? UPDATE: Eight minutes after emailing the support team, they were kind enough to message me back. (Wow! Kudos!) SHIFT-BACKSPACE will be re-enabled soon. It's a bug. (See https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=637983) Hopefully the Chromium team will be able to address the extensions-disabled-by-corporate-policy-so-this-won't-work problem soon. HTH!
Making this extension was a bad idea. It introduces security problems and clutter and eats memory. This is too much for a simple feature that should be enabled by default. There were already pop-ups in place to prevent loss of data. From what I've seen, many of the complaints against Backspace were from before they were introduced. Alt-left rotates some users screen due to graphics configurations. Revert to the old behavior or re-assign "back" to the del key for a sane solution.
I don't think they deserve the loads of 1 star ratings that they are getting since they did fix some of the problems at least. Yes, the implementation with an extension is kind of strange. I would much rather have it be a toggle in the Settings tab, but that's up to Google's decision. Some problems that still exist: 1) Shift+Backspace does not go forward. 2) There are still issues with the backspace detection. It is not disabled on readonly fields. I guess that is fine. But it doesn't work on some websites. The Chrome Store is one of them. When I hit backspace and the search bar is not focused at all, it won't take me back.
Bring the backspace back! Instead of using this stupid extension.
Should have been a setting that could toggle instead of forcing me to install an extension to do something that Chrome has been doing naively for years. Google, just make this into a setting you still have time to fix it.
