Went from great to awful. I guess it's nice to still be able to read my message but the lack of an ability to respond is just is so disappointing - was so great for so many years. Too bad Google decided to mess something good up. I'd love to understand the logic behind it, why Google would make their users want to use the native SMS (or what's app even) than GVoice.
This went from being an acceptable interface to gVoice with a killer function of in-toolbar texting to just an annoying quick-link to your gVoice inbox. I cannot send SMS from the toolbar anymore, without this killer functionality, it is a waste of resources a bookmark can fix.
This extension was updated just a few months ago, August 22, 2019, according to the Chrome web store, but it feels like abandonware. It's lost the ability to initiate calls or send texts. It doesn't support MMS correctly. The visual design is ancient compared to the Google Voice web page proper. I wish the extension would get some love because it's very convenient compared to having the tab open all the time.
This extension prevents some sites from working. I had to disable all extensions to figure it out and wasted a lot of time clearing caches, cookies, etc. to figure out it was this extension. Try Katom dot com.
This has been a GREAT extension for years. I have been a Google Voice user since before it was even Google Voice (Google bought a company called Grand Central in 2007). I've seen great features come and in some cases go. As of Today (December 2019) the texting feature from this extension is no longer working. I hope they fix it soon. I will go back to 5 stars, even though there are many more features I wish it had, but at least fix the ones you do have! Come on Google... use your infinite money and resources to fix this simple issue.
FYI from the gv support site In 2017, we launched an updated user interface (UI) for Google Voice and announced we would be phasing out the legacy UI. As part of this plan, we are turning off the ability to send text messages (SMS) in both the legacy Google Voice web interface as well as the Google Voice Chrome extension.
I've used Google Voice for years specifically for overseas call to Europe & Australia. Works great on calls to landline and cell phones for only a few cents per minute. I only use the basics & could not figure out or need all the other 'gobbly gook'. For a couple of years was able to access Google Voice via speed dial on land line home phone...but then it stopped working...so had to start dialing from the PC, Laptop PC. Then was given a iPad 2 & iPhone 5 (iPad 2 = iOS 9.x is the highest version available & iPhone 5 = iOS 10.x) & they worked up until 3 Dec 2019 when they (Apple) updated the Google Voice app on the Apple store that now requires iOS 11.0 or higher to function. I used the iPad twice on 3 Dec'19 to call overseas and when I tried the third time a notice popped up that said needed to update the Google Voice app. Neither of the Apple devices (iPad & iPhone) will work with Google Voice because the old software in not compatible with the updated Google Voice app on 3 Dec '13. So...now stuck with functioning Apple devices but with growing built in obsolescence. Well it appears that I need to go out and buy another phone &/or tablet to use Google Voice...Sad! Guess I'll just have to rely on my good ole Windows PC that still works just fine.
The best communication app around in my opinion. I have used gvoice as my first choice for texting my contacts for several years, I prefer it over hangouts and i think having it integrated within gmail as the earlier version was made it even better,,This is one app that i hope is not dropped or fixed (ie hangouts). There are alot of things gvoice really helps with,,,first off many of us dont own or use smart phones, Gvoice picks up many of the smart phone features,,like those pesky security verification text or codes,, those who live in bad cellphone areas know how much better it is to have a instant reliable mobil connection, right on the desktop,,,beats running around on cold nights to catch that extra login step that some website decides to send you at some ridiculous early am hour,,My only issue with gvoice is that my text messages sometimes,,get a tad long typed up on a full size keyboard and sent to a cell,,lol Great app if you take advantage of all it can do.One last note I see alot folks saying how much better it used to be,,subjective and i wonder how many things that could apply to,,,
Wonderful application! However, Google Voice extension for Chrome is currently not working??? When sending a text from the extension, the extension says, "Please try again later" in highlighted pink. I already cleared data and reinstalled the application.
Used to be 4-5 star, but they broke it a few months ago and you can no longer send texts from it. They know about this, so not sure why they broke it when they "upgraded" Google Voice. UPDATE: They broke it even further; now it's only a shortcut to the Google Voice web page. Which is ironic, because that's against Google's own Chrome Extension policy seen here: https://developer.chrome.com/webstore/program_policies#extensions:~:text=Do%20not%20post%20an%20extension Give me a Google Voice API and I'll make my own tools...
