Tried a few parental control options and this one does exactly what I need without charging a fortune. The free tier let me test it properly before committing. My three kids each have their own profile with different channels approved based on their ages. The 9-year-old gets Minecraft creators I've vetted, the 14-year-old gets science and coding channels. Smart setup.
I researched this before installing because I'm cautious about extensions that interact with my 14-year-old's browsing data. Their privacy policy is clear - they don't collect data from the kids, just enforce the whitelist. That was the deciding factor for me. The extension does what it says and nothing more. Refreshing in an age of data harvesting.
My 11-year-old autistic son has very specific interests - trains, maps, and weather. I've curated a list of channels that match what he loves without exposing him to content that causes him distress. The fact that he gets a focused YouTube experience with only things he enjoys has actually made screen time a positive part of his routine.
The change in my 11-year-old's behavior after a month of using this has been noticeable. Less agitation after screen time, fewer arguments about turning off YouTube, and he actually talks about what he watched because it's quality content now instead of random garbage. I didn't expect a Chrome extension to make that much of a difference but here we are.
We live in Germany and most parental controls are designed for English content. WhitelistVideo doesn't care about language - it just lets me pick channels regardless. I've approved German educational channels, English learning channels, and a few entertainment ones for my 9 and 13 year old. Works perfectly across languages.
The family I work for has a 10 and 12 year old and set this up on the home computer. They gave me access to the dashboard so I can see what channels are approved and even suggest new ones for the parents to review. It makes my job easier because I don't have to constantly check over their shoulders. Parents love the transparency.
We have 10-year-old twin boys who are into completely different things. One loves space and dinosaurs, the other is all about art and music. Each kid has their own profile with their own approved channels. They share a computer but get different YouTube experiences. That flexibility sold us on this over other options we looked at.
Third parental control extension I've tried. The first one broke YouTube completely. The second one was easy to bypass - my 9-year-old disabled it in about 10 minutes. This one actually works and my kid can't just turn it off. The pairing system with the device is clever. Two months in and no issues.
Not going to lie, I was nervous about setting up something like this because I'm not a computer person. But the step-by-step walkthrough made it pretty painless. Took me about 10 minutes to get it running and add channels. My 12-year-old helped me pick which channels to allow which was actually a nice conversation to have together.
I appreciate that this doesn't make judgments about what's appropriate - it lets ME decide based on our family's values. I've whitelisted educational content, Islamic cartoons, and Quran recitation channels that align with how we want to raise our children. Other filters either block too much or not enough. This is the right approach.
