Make sure to use Chrome version 84+ with this extension, otherwise the automatic selection of the locationbar text doesn't work.

Since Google updated Chrome to version 29, the App overview is no longer shown, when opening a new tab. This extension restores that behaviour to the way it was.

Tip: the keyboard shortcut CTRL+L (Windows/Linux) or CMD+L (macOS) highlights the URL.

* Upgraded to manifest V3. The rest of the extension code is exactly the same as version 2.1.0. Please bear in mind that the display of the apps is handled by internal Chrome code. This means that this extension has no influence over how that looks.

* Fixed a bug so that the address bar is highlighted again

Thanks Bjorn. Folks turn to me for answers and solutions to this kind of thing, since I'm fairly adept at researching. What SHOULD'VE been an easy to locate solution became a next to impossible answer due to Google's convoluted user forum interfaces AND "updated" configurations. There've been numerous complaints about Google's attempts to unsuccessfully streamline its Chrome "home page" by eliminating what some inexperienced Google coder thought was unnecessary -- a quick reference to Google apps and tools (Gmail, Drive, Storage, etc). Inexperienced, out of touch employees will be the demise of Google if they don't get a handle on upgrade deployments by staying in touch with users. Bottom line: could not believe I could not find a way of reestablishing a default apps/toolbar menu so thanks for simplifying what should've been a simple solution! This REALLY should've been an easy task.

So glad for this. Why did you change a good thing on Google Chrome??? The new way should at the very least have an option to choose which format you want to see when you open Chrome!

Does what it claims: restores the old style new tab, so you don't get the useless new style new tab.

Great extesion. It just brings back the apps to Google Chrome's new tab. Just install it and everything will be as it should.

Just the extension I was looking for. I was disappointed when google made the change to new tabs opening that search like tab instead. Do the people at google not realize if you want to search just start typing in the address bar. I don't need a tab dedicated to searching.
