Product summary

Review the store description, core capabilities, and common use cases.

Try h264ify if YouTube videos stutter, take up too much CPU, eat battery life, or make your laptop hot.

By default, YouTube streams VP8/VP9 encoded video. However, this can cause problems with less powerful machines because VP8/VP9 is not typically hardware accelerated.

In contrast, H.264 is commonly hardware accelerated by GPUs, which usually means smoother video playback and reduced CPU usage. h264ify makes YouTube stream H.264 videos instead of VP8/VP9 videos.

Note: 4K and 1440p videos will not be available because YouTube no longer encodes those videos in H.264

My initial impression is that it operates optimally. Not to give it to much praise, as I've said I've only just installed it. But, it seems to work pretty well -now if for any reason this changes. I'll either update my review or post a following review. If there isn't a second post created by me, then operate under the assumption that everything is going swell.

Was unable to find a solution to the stuttering on my low end laptop for quite a while. I drop hardly any frames now at 1080/60, sweet!

now i can watch youtube on chrome 44 with my intel core m without maxing out the cpu. it uses 10-15% cpu for 1080p 60fps compared to stuttering at 100% cpu usage before

Worked, but after approximately a month caused ALL youtube videos to stutter, regardless of quality.

awesome! are you planning to extend it for twitch? also it would be great to change vp8/9 to h264 everywhere when video plays. is it possible?

only problem is it seems to make a single pixel line across the screen, but only when the ui is showing, so i can live with it. *EDIT* the line is not this extensions fault, i found out, my chrome is doing it, not sure why, nor how, but it does. so 5 stars, since its not the extensions fault.

Sound Quality Restored!! the Webm / vp8 codec just didn't produce the same quality of sound as the mp4 one does through the codec
