Product summary

Try h264ify if YouTube videos stutter, take up too much CPU, eat battery life, or make your laptop hot.

By default, YouTube streams VP8/VP9 encoded video. However, this can cause problems with less powerful machines because VP8/VP9 is not typically hardware accelerated.

In contrast, H.264 is commonly hardware accelerated by GPUs, which usually means smoother video playback and reduced CPU usage. h264ify makes YouTube stream H.264 videos instead of VP8/VP9 videos.

Note: 4K and 1440p videos will not be available because YouTube no longer encodes those videos in H.264

Works really great with my Thoshiba Chromebook 2. 60fps 1080p Videos on YouTube now play very smoothly.

For me, it worked. Please don't forget to enable hardware acceleration in Chrome again, if you turned it off because of some tips you got from other people. My specs: Q6600 @3GHz & 7870 with Haiti chipset. 1080p 60FPS are playable without any problem - lost 114 frames of a 20 min. video is acceptable I think. But Google really should include an option to disable 60FPS and give at least better options for playback the videos.

Fantastic. VP9 is not ready for prime time, yet the YouTube team decided to force it on all of us. h264ify gives us back the power of choice. Thanks to the developer for making this.

Recién lo pruebo y funciona por ahora. Creo que esta extensión hace que los vídeos de youtube usen la gpu para mejorar la reproducción de videos, y no solo la cpu.
