Most extensions that allow a custom URL for the new tab page do so by redirecting to the URL then attempting to focus on the address bar.
The second step of focusing on the address bar when using the redirect method was broken in Chrome 61.
This extension fixes the second step by using a new method, rather than redirecting it loads the URL in the background then injects its content into a empty new tab page.
This means there is no redirect, and therefore the address bar never actually loses focus in the first place.

A minimal and secure Chrome extension to set a custom URL for the new tab page.
Simply set the URL you want new tabs to load and it'll load it. No fluff.
Customize the new tab URL.
Allows you to change New Tab page to your specific URL.
Load a custom web page or url in a new tab. Fast, light, and easy to use.
It seems to be very slow (tested on multiple fast devices on different fast networks), when trying to load in certain websites, and if the website does load it's sometimes missing images for some reason. Pretty generous giving it 4 stars.
Doesn't work with local files. I set it to open a local html file on my desktop and it just opens a blank new tab.
Does what it says: Take control of your tabs. IMHO This is a responsive developer who is making life better. Thank you.
Works like a charm. I especially love the fact that it highlights the addressbar after opening a new tab, so I can immediately start entering a search or website address.
Why does it have to read all data from all pages?
doesn't tell you how to select the webpage that you want it to load
I wanted to keep the chrome://newtab feature with my 10 prefered urls showing under the search field. and I wanted to focus the search field (and not the address bar). I guess it's not possible to have both with this extension ..
como vrg borro esto?
Great extension, especially since Chrome doesn't let you set a different new tab page. I wanted to make a custom startpage for Chrome but Chrome doesn't let you do that. The closest thing to that is setting a website that will open on startup, but then when you click new tab it goes to the Chrome new tab.
Does what it says on the tin! This is great, much faster and effective than other options. The override method is better than the redirect method.
