It's supposed to show the number of unread emails but it usually just shows a grey question mark.

refreshing thats the problem. even if i read email , checker show me unread posts 15-30min...

Half the time I am signed in, but instead of the number of unread mail in my inbox, a gray question mark appears.
Extension suddenly stopped working. It always showed number of new emails when I had gmail open. Now it always shows only question mark.
