Go back with the backspace button! This extension re-enables the backspace key as a back navigation button -- except if you're writing text.
What's New in 3.0:

* Updated to Manifest V3.
Before Chrome 52, the backspace key navigated back (if you weren't writing text). Many people lost their progress while working online by accidentally pressing backspace and leaving a page -- so we removed the feature from Chrome, and created this extension for those who prefer the old behavior.
This extension can't restore backspace on certain special pages, for example any of the "chrome://" pages such as Settings or Extensions.

Backspace as back should be the default functionality. Changing this functionality should be a setting and not an extension. The one-star rating reflects the initial decision to "fix" this issue in the first place. Backspace as back has been the default functionality for a long time and should not have been changed. The extension works as advertised, but it shouldn't be necessary in the first place.
Die Backspace-Taste ihrer Funktion zu berauben, nervt tierisch und ist keine gute Idee von Google gewesen. Nervtötende Bevormundung. Hiermit gibt es Abhilfe.

Brill - thanks for giving us this back, just a shame you took it out of Chrome to start with! And bonus points for listening to feedback and adding shift-backspace to take us forward again.
Congratulations Google. You finally motivated me to make Mozilla Firefox my default browser. This decision to kill the backspace and "fix" it with an extension is an arrogant brainfart of the highest magnitude. I guess you guys are all smarter than your users. The last thing I want is another freaking extension slowing down my browser. I have imported all of my bookmarks to Firefox, as that was the ONLY thing that was keeping me on Chrome. I sincerely hope someone gets fired for this. Screw you guys, I'm going home.
Funktioniert nicht immer. Bestes Beispiel ist der Chrome Web Store selbst. Warum man nicht eine Flag setzten kann ist mir absolut unverständlich
Backspace to go back is one of the few things I consider an essential feature of chrome. It has to be there, period. I'm rating this 5 stars to drive that point home with Google ... it should never have got to the point where we had to add an extension for this functionality. That said, thanks for listening to feedback and giving us our backspace back.
Thank you, Google. Now we need an extension to do what was supposed to be a default function. So much innovation.
I've been using backspace for over 10 years, hundreds of times per day without any issues. I love Google, but this extension is just plain unnecessary and actually breaks the warning system that was working properly when pressing backspace while filling forms. I hate this but I have to leave Chrome, time to go back to Firefox again...
