Product summary

Review the store description, core capabilities, and common use cases.

This extension allows you to customize font settings for different language scripts. For example, you can set the default font for Simplified Chinese content to be different than the font for Japanese content. The settings are per-script (as specified in ISO 15924) rather than per-language. For example, there is a single setting for Cyrillic script rather than separate ones for Russian, Ukrainian, etc.

Chrome will use the font settings controlled by this extension when BOTH of the following are true:

1) The web page has declared the language of the content (e.g., by using the HTML lang attribute); and

2) The web page has not specified a font to use.

To use this extension, add it to Chrome and then go to chrome://extensions and click on the "Options" link for this extension.

I've always thought Chrome wasn't great at displaying CJK text. 6 years in the waiting and I've finally come across the solution!

For a long time I thought that this extension didn't work at all. Eventually I figured out that unlike the other browsers, which detect language automatically, this extension uses the "lang" html attribute to make the decision. So it works on web pages that use that attribute, but not on other pages. The automatic approach makes a lot more sense because often languages are mixed. This plugin falls back on some arbitrary font for any other characters that show up outside of the stated language, which is unfortunate.

Does everything it's supposed to do, even though Chrome is a bit limiting in this regard compared to e.g. Firefox.

Seems to only work with the default script and not any of the per-language ones, which obviously makes the extension do nothing more than the default UI. Hopefully it gets fixed and this 5 year oversight in Chrome will finally be solved.

Just why can't I change the script? If I cannot change the script then what's the meaning of this? Tested on Chrome 25.0.1364.152.

There was no way to change the SCRIPT. The reason I downloaded was to make the ugly Windows 7 display of Chinese look nicer - like Ubuntu or Mac. This doesn't let me pick Chinese from the scripts, so I'm still stuck... for now.
