This extension will make mailto: links open in a Gmail compose window. Nothing more, nothing less.
* Supports Google Apps accounts
* Works on javascript-inserted links
* Includes option of working on bcc: fields
It supports to, cc, subject, and body (and optionally bcc) fields, and is made to be compatible with RFC2368, the mailto: scheme standard.
It doesn't modify the mailto:address itself, so you can still see the link in the status bar when you hover over it, which allows you to easily read the target at a glance.

IT COOL MAN!
It didn't work and appears I'm not alone
Caused 2 gmail windows to open. Useless extension since Chrome already supports this by default.
doesn't work
Did not work on Windows 7 (tried reloading tab/browser). I did however find a way to get chrome to handle mailto without a plugin/extension: go to gmail website, in the far right of the address bar is an icon looking like two overlapping tilted squares (next to the star favourite icon), click this and select "allow gmail to open all email links" and voila!
This just straight up doesn't work on Ubuntu.
at least with me explorer integration does not work. (i use right-click a lot) ok, but could be better.
it doesn't work for me -- chrome/Windows 10. mailto links didn't work before and still don't
