NewsGuard's reliability ratings for news and information sources help users make decisions about which news sources to trust—and avoid misinformation and disinformation.

Our ratings, scores, and Nutrition Labels for websites are displayed next to links on search engines and social media platforms and cover all the news websites accounting for 95% of online engagement.

Ratings are conducted by a team of experienced journalists using nine basic, apolitical journalistic criteria. Each site receives a trust score of 0-100, an overall rating level ranging from “High Credibility” to “Proceed with Caution,” and a thorough Nutrition Label report detailing the site’s ownership and financing, content, credibility practices, transparency practices, and history.

Great review site. I find it very useful in assessing the reliability of news sites.

It is a good tool for teaching students what fact checking looks like and that, yes, you can check the fact checkers much more easily than you presume.

So the 1 star reviews are people bitching that Breitbart is rated red and it's against right wingers. They are incorrect. It's against false information. This app does what it says it does. It gives details on whether or not the sites print fake news, reveal sources, reveal funding etc. Even many more liberal sites get some red checks. From what I have found studying fake or proven news myself, this is an excellent extension for a quick take on sites. Some sites do surprise you, such as Daily Mail - which actually changed it's act recently to GET a green rating on this app (as originally very red). Very trustworthy.

separate the wheat from the chaff! essential! Now - in 2026, I continue to use this extension to help identify bona fide sources of journalism.

Unfortunately, the quality is very poor. For example, in articles with misinformation about the alleged presence of "nazi in Ukraine", the top topic of Russian propaganda, the program places green trust signs everywhere. There are no tracked sites with misinformation in Russian, of which there are many.

I've been using this for months, and its ratings are reliable and accurate. It's extremely useful when doing fact checking, and I know some fact-checkers and journalists who use this extension as well. (That's how I first heard about it, in fact.) I recommend it for everyone in this age of disinformation.

I heard about this app through my library computer but installed it at home too because it's pretty useful. I don't find it to be biased and I find the information provided to be very usefful.
