Protect My Choices is an extension for users seeking to opt out of interest-based advertising and to help ensure that their opt-out choices are protected. In one step it opts your browser out of interest-based advertising performed by companies participating in the industry self-regulatory programme for online advertising, and protects those opt-out choices by helping to prevent the accidental deletion of cookies that store your choices.
Some things you should know:
1. Protect My Choices applies to interest-based advertising by participating companies. Once you install this extension you will still receive online advertising from participating companies and the web sites you visit may still collect information for other purposes.
2. As more companies join the industry self-regulatory programme, their opt-outs will be added to Protect My Choices. As with all Chrome extensions, you’ll be asked to allow Chrome to update the extension to add new opt-outs. If you do not update the extension it will be disabled until you update it. You can confirm that your opt-outs have been set at http://www.aboutads.info/choices/. You can always check the status of your extensions by clicking Extensions in the Window menu.
3. This extension and your opt-out choices apply only in this browser, so you should set your preferences for other browsers or computers you may use separately.

As best I can tell, this extension has done what it is supposed to do since I installed it over a year ago, but does anyone know why the newest version is disabled for me until I give it permission to do something new, namely, "read and change your data on a number of websites"? That doesn't sound good so I still have the extension disabled.
Weird, recent updates seemed to temporarily circumvent my Ad Block Pro extension and start showing me ads once more. Also experiencing higher CPU usage, though not sure if it's Chrome or this plugin. I've disabled it for now and pushing ADP up in it's priority of use as that update has shown targeted ads.
Massive runaway CPU usage. Avoid until fixed.

I can only shake my head when I see all the bad reviews. This extension is not an ad blocker nor is it in any relation to the spam that you receive via mail. All this extension does, is setting cookies that tell participating companies that you do not want them to personalise advertisements for you. It's a good effort and saves the user time as she does not have to opt-out manually from any of the participating companies. Besides, these cookies are set permanently and stay unaffected from cleaning your browser history, which is another plus.
it does nothing! I still get hundreds of ads.
It does NOT reduce ads! It avalanches them into my e-mail without any option to delete them.--When companies do this, do they have any realization that their products become anathema to the viewer? That would seem to defeat the whole purpose for which they make their proclamations!

It downloads cookies to the browser, and I have no reason to believe a self-regulated industry has my best interest in hand. I'll stick to managing cookies myself by blocking the ones that have no reason to be stored on my computer.
There's something wrong with this extension, it's hogging my CPU. I had to disable it :(
