NewsGuard's reliability ratings for news and information sources help users make decisions about which news sources to trust—and avoid misinformation and disinformation.

Our ratings, scores, and Nutrition Labels for websites are displayed next to links on search engines and social media platforms and cover all the news websites accounting for 95% of online engagement.

Ratings are conducted by a team of experienced journalists using nine basic, apolitical journalistic criteria. Each site receives a trust score of 0-100, an overall rating level ranging from “High Credibility” to “Proceed with Caution,” and a thorough Nutrition Label report detailing the site’s ownership and financing, content, credibility practices, transparency practices, and history.

Used this to help teach news literacy to my 6th Grade class. They loved it! Spent half the class looking up sites they read to see their raing.

I was a little skeptical of this, but honestly I'm impressed with how many sites they've rated and how generally accurate they are. Not everything is perfect, but they're really transparent about their process and their ratings are super helpful. I even used one of the red nutrition labels to point my aunt away from some BS medical advice she was sharing...

Provides lots of context on news sources. I don't agree with every rating they issue, but since they explain everything in full and show each of their criteria, I can ultimately judge for myself.

What does it do? gives you a starting point to determine if a site is credible or not. how should you use it? to give you a starting point to determine if a site is credible or not. Is it always 100% accurate? not always, sites like sputnik are misslabled in atleast a few catagories (it's well known that they are a russian international news site... key point RUSSIAN, and they often post conspiracy stuff because some people have an idea about how to entertain, though it's quite obvious which articles those are) and some other sites like New York Times to a minor degree, and apparently MSNBC are mislabled in a positive light. but these sites are individually curated, they can't be considered 100% accurate 100% of the time. Newsguard can't monitor every site 100% of the time to find out if every site is being 100% responsible. at the end of the day these ratings are assigned by humans not robots, there will always be bias and there will always be a few sites that are otherwise inaccurately or miss labled. that's just a fact of the product. this is why it is a good point to start to determine if a site is generally credible.

I use it daily to understand the journalistic veracity of the sources linked on social media, and I strongly recommend that everyone use it to fight the actual fake news so prevalent in places like Facebook.
