NewsGuard's reliability ratings for news and information sources help users make decisions about which news sources to trust—and avoid misinformation and disinformation.
Our ratings, scores, and Nutrition Labels for websites are displayed next to links on search engines and social media platforms and cover all the news websites accounting for 95% of online engagement.
Ratings are conducted by a team of experienced journalists using nine basic, apolitical journalistic criteria. Each site receives a trust score of 0-100, an overall rating level ranging from “High Credibility” to “Proceed with Caution,” and a thorough Nutrition Label report detailing the site’s ownership and financing, content, credibility practices, transparency practices, and history.

Absolutely BIASED. Buzzfeed is trust worthy? A biased, blogging, garbage dump of a website that LIES constantly? Wapo, NY Times these are all NON-TRUSTY, biased website that have been none known to push agenda driving stories and fake news. This extension is a joke and the people who review are biased editors. FACT.
So far, so good. Most of the negative reviews seem to be from people who don't want their alt-right "news" sources being called into question. I'll update my review as I use the tool more.
The idea of having a "nutrition facts" for news is a good one, although this needs a feedback option to report inaccurate ratings for a couple of websites. This tool gets a 2 star rating because of having inaccurate ratings for websites that harms factual knowledge. Since that is the core value of this tool is Restoring Trust and Accountability, this tool does not deliver. (ex. Buzzfeed is rated as all green according to the tool, that is not accurate, it does not handle the difference between news and opinion and it certainly does not gathers and presents information responsibly. CNN, is not without sin, it has a couple instances where it makes mistakes and does not address it and does not gather and presents information responsibly, [Areva martin incident, where she accused a black man having white privilege). Marking most liberal news sites as "credible sites" can be misconstrued as the tool is biased which is an interesting theory but credible evidence needs to be provided to prove the tool leans to a political agenda (nowadays everything has an agenda). At least Fox News, MSNBC, and ABC news are accurately labeled, but for a tool that is attempting to "restore trust and accountability" it needs to be near perfect.
Fantastic extension. About time something like this came out and started making news sites actually start thinking about what they post and the damage it can have.
Good idea, poorly executed. I would like to see this done by an unbiased AI rather than biased people. Try to see what the news sites are "pushing"; Is it USA Neo Liberal friendly news, then green check. Everything else, proceed with caution... I know I'm biased myself, but this is beyond ridiculous...
I am a left-wing Social Democrat from the UK who generally supports the Labour party. This extension is a great idea and I love how detailed the reports are and how well sourced they are. Many news sites outside of America however are either unreported or unreviewed, but most news media in America does appear to have been reviewed. This should be expected considering it's an American start-up. A major problem however, speaking as a left winger myself, is this extension has an obvious left-wing bias. As an example, The Independent, a British tabloid that is essentially the left-wing version of the Daily Mail, is rated as pretty much flawless. This is categorically false and misleading. The Independent is widely regarded to be clickbaity and misleading (https://theconversation.com/four-reasons-why-listicles-and-clickbait-are-killing-real-journalism-67406 - https://cld.agency/blog/art-clickbait-headline-independent-won-internet - https://www.holdthefrontpage.co.uk/2016/news/baiting-the-reader-identifying-the-newspaper-version-of-clickbait-by-sean-dodson/). Another problem, is the pop-up that appears on a negative website is misleading and doesn't fully explain the problem at hand. Yes, you can click the extension symbol in the topbar for details, but realistically who's gonna do that every time? Going to Russia Today and being told it doesn't 'uphold journalistic standards' is basically just a whole load of saying nothing. It should give a brief overview of the bias Russia Today has - that is, Russia Today is a Russian mouthpiece and should be treated as such. There's still value in reading it as someone interested in Geopolitics, because you get the direct perspective of the Russian government. Another issue, is that it does not support https://old.reddit.com or https://news.google.com
I am a conservative and I think NewsGuard is doing a great job. They are trying very hard to be communicative and open about their ratings. As some people have said not all of their ratings are perfect but the only way we can get there is participating and buying their product or starting our own. Given that NewsGuard is already up and running (only needing our support and feedback to grow & evolve...) we could give it a chance by encouraging it to not suppress conservatives and hold liberal sources EQUALLY accountable; instead of writing it off as another fake news techno-facisitic consolidation of 'facts' and their arbitration. The only thing that would take my rating to 5 stars is being able to buy chunks of subscription instead of it being month to month.
Good so far. I like that they reveal how a site is rated in the description, a little more detail would be useful, but nonetheless...this is a step in the right direction. I feel like most of the negative reviews on here aren't very substantive, just people complaining because a site they like has been judged negatively. Or maybe they are just heavily invested in RT.
this app is garbage and so is the website
This extension is fake news
