Make sure to use Chrome version 84+ with this extension, otherwise the automatic selection of the locationbar text doesn't work.
Since Google updated Chrome to version 29, the App overview is no longer shown, when opening a new tab. This extension restores that behaviour to the way it was.
Tip: the keyboard shortcut CTRL+L (Windows/Linux) or CMD+L (macOS) highlights the URL.

* Upgraded to manifest V3. The rest of the extension code is exactly the same as version 2.1.0. Please bear in mind that the display of the apps is handled by internal Chrome code. This means that this extension has no influence over how that looks.
* Fixed a bug so that the address bar is highlighted again

I got on hand AND choose what I accurately NEED!
Boom! Love it. :-) I see a lot of reviews complaining about the omnibar being filled, but on my machine it is highlighted when I open the tab, so there's no real difference.

Like it, it brings google back to the way I remember and like it. Only thing is I has Windows 8 so in "App Mode" I don't see anything. I have to click the more button along the botton to see them all.
this app actually works hiding that recently closed tabs, but unfortunately for me who likes using custom themes, the app does not work properly together with all the themes which the themes look zoomed-in on the screen
It's not great that it fills the omnibar, but this is easy to get around: Use Ctrl-L (or command-L on mac) to select all text in the omnibar before typing in your desired URL or search.
