Excellent concept and useful tool. I would give it 4.5 stars or 4 stars only because many of the news organizations I am interested in are not rated yet. These are very often little news sites, or foreign sites with little American or British readership. That said I give it 5 stars because of the extremist that are, well extremely bias. I have seen various news sites that are liberal with Red shields (that is over all failing grade) and conservative media with Green shield (that is passing grade), and satire is marked with an orange shield. The extremist below hate the fact that their favorite very extreme news site often failed to meet many of the standards of good journalism. Bias reporting has nothing to do with it. Each news site is judged on false content, presenting information responsibly, corrects errors, handles opinions and new responsibly, avoids deceptive headlines, discloses ownership/financing, labels advertising, reveals management/conflicts of interest, and provides the names of content creators with biographical information. A news site does not need to pass all of these marks to be judged 'good'. It also gives a brief view on the news sites standards and transparency. Also is a section about the news site. It will clearly state if the organization is liberal, conservative, or moderate, with some additional information that can be helpful. Last is a link "full Nutrition Label" that will give a fairly in-depth view on why each category was rated with a green or red mark, history about the news site, and more. Along with many links supporting their decision, and even a feedback link. Before I get lambasted by the right wing haters. Take the three largest news groups, CNN, Fox, and MSNBC. All pass the general standards. CNN has one red X, Fox two, and MSNBC three. It clearly labels MSNBC as liberal, and Fox as conservative. CNN s not label by NewGuard in a political spectrum. I might add, I have hear many of the extreme right wingers start calling Fox News a liberal reporting agency. So. There you have it. I have not seen NewGuard label any organization as libertarian, green, socialize, fascist, or the like. Only liberal, conservative or no label at all. They do update the ratings. I have seen this more than once. Both for liberal and conservative sites, either as the site improves the quality of journalism and disclosure or as the site sinks into cloudy murk.

While the ratings can be biased / misleading, it is better than not having any idea of the veracity of what you read on the internet. No rating system is perfect, but you read their rationale behind each if you so desire.

This tool makes it a lot easier to judge how much a story from a source needs to be validated before believing it. Like any tool, it's not perfect, but it's a lot easier than flying blind or relying solely on my own biases. It's a nice gut check.

I use it mostly to identify The Onion knockoffs that do the bare minimum to disclose themselves, which it seems to be doing a good job of. To everyone who's observed that a number of the conservative outlets like Breitbart and whatever are getting marked red - yes, that's the point exactly. You shouldn't even need this extension to know that.

Great concept, but they are biased which isn't what i'm looking for. They are very left leaning and verify actually false news like on CNN and TheDailyBeast. While I am left leaning myself I try to read all sources and create my own opinion. But when they trash the dailywire for a true, but opinionated peace and dont when the dailybeast publishes actual fake news it's ridiculous. Cant get away from leftism bias even when I try.

Easy to use quick reference to test the validity of sites. The metrics that Newsguard uses are slightly incomplete so I wouldn't use it as the defining source of evaluating the credibility of every website, but it is a great superficial look at what certain sites contain.
