NewsGuard's reliability ratings for news and information sources help users make decisions about which news sources to trust—and avoid misinformation and disinformation.

Our ratings, scores, and Nutrition Labels for websites are displayed next to links on search engines and social media platforms and cover all the news websites accounting for 95% of online engagement.

Ratings are conducted by a team of experienced journalists using nine basic, apolitical journalistic criteria. Each site receives a trust score of 0-100, an overall rating level ranging from “High Credibility” to “Proceed with Caution,” and a thorough Nutrition Label report detailing the site’s ownership and financing, content, credibility practices, transparency practices, and history.

I like the extension because I have to write a lot of papers and this helps me to see what articles are reliable. One problem I have is sometimes websites have not been reviewed and there have some websites that have been like that for months but that should hopefully happen soon. I have not yet experienced glitches so far a smooth experience.

This is a great idea that needs development. At the moment it's good for flagging up very dubious sources, but is not particularly useful for the majority of sources, just a blanket of green ticks with limited variation. As others have said, there are sources that occasionally report false or exaggerated news that still get all criteria ticked off. If there was more nuance in the rating, as opposed to green vs red, displaying upfront some indication of adherence to the criteria, it might be more useful. Keep up the good work, the internet needs this!

It's solid. I find the Nutrition Labels to be fairly consistent and useful, and overall think it does a solid job of flagging sources that should be approached with some amount of skepticism. I do occasionally need to remind myself that the ratings are based on the sites themselves and not an evaluation of the claims and statements made within the body of the article, but that's a user-side issue. My only complaint (and it's a minor one) is that the green check - red x dichotomy doesn't have an immediate indicator as to how many or which standards a given source fails - even if it were just which category the concerns fall into (C for Credibility, T for Transparency or something similar) it would give more immediate information at a glance. Overall though, I find it a useful companion for more traditional fact-checking resources.

Trusted? Ya... Buzzfeed is well known for misleading headlines, posting opinions as fact, and posting lies... yet somehow NewsGuard gives them a green check for "Handles the different between news and opinion responsibility" (there is no differentiation on BuzzFeed), a green check on "Avoids Deceptive Headlines", a green check on "Regularly checks and clarifies errors"... yet BuzzFeed still has an article titled "A Man Was Stabbed To Death In A Fight Over A Popeyes Chicken Sandwich" which is a) not what happened [guy cut in line], b) the family has said it was not over a chicken sandwich, and c) BuzzFeed has not corrected their article or clickbaity headline. This is just 1 in DOZENS of false information pushed by BuzzFeed that according to NewsGuard is a trustworthy site with green checks across the board. Biased group giving checks to their buddies, nothing more. This group cannot be trusted to actually fairly rate sites.
