Downloads Router is a tiny extension that helps you avoid cleaning the dreaded "Downloads" folder by automatically saving files in the right places.
Downloads Router springs into action whenever you start downloading a file. It looks at the filename, filetype, or origin domain (source website) of the item, and matches this information against rules that you define on the extension's Options page. Should a matching rule exist, a "suggestion" is sent to the browser, indicating where it should save the file; this suggestion may however be overridden, as for instance when you use the "Save As..." feature.

You don't support mime masks or "starts with", do you? That's huge deficiency!
My Downloads folder too was getting out of hand. This extension EASILY lets you direct regularly downloaded file types to a separate user defined folder. Instructions even reminded me of the symbolic link function in Windows. I use the feature extensively on my *nix platforms and had forgotten that MS had a similar feature.
An excellent extension! I don't know whether it supports mapping multiple filetypes(mime) to one folder in only one rule. If it does, it will be perfect. And the filename routing instruction is not clear enough
Macht genau das was es soll. Super!
This extension is fantastic. Possible change is to make the "Save configuration" pop out a little more. Even though it is a green bar, I kept missing it and though the settings were being automatically saved. PEBKAC on my part 100% but maybe make it look more like a button rather than a header/separator.
Update: Make sure to never choose the option "Enable global referrer folders" as this will mess up all of your router settings. This is off by default, but just a warning in case someone tries it and doesn't realize that's the reason the extension started acting weird. This extension is pretty amazing. One of the most common and annoying problems with browsers is that your downloads folder piles up and becomes a complicated mess of different files you've accumulated over time, which can take a lot of effort to sort through. This extension takes care of all that ahead of time, and makes organizing your downloads folder much easier. So far my only problem has been that .zip files have been labeled as "undefined" rather than in the zip folder that I designated in the settings.
This really helps me when I'm developing excel files. Thanks!
Any way to save in a folder besides C/downloads/folder? I tried entering the whole path of another HDD but does not seem to work
You are a GOD, my friend! There was only one guy that attempted to create a similar extension, but he abandoned the project. I have searched for this functionality on chrome for years, but to no avail. I've saved hundreds of thousands of files throughout the years and now they are completely unorganized and spread on 8 hdd's. Your extension is awesome.
Did exactly what I wanted it to do! The routing rules page told me exactly how to get the functionality I wanted set up up!
